Salvadoran and South Korean coffee producers recently took part in the First Virtual Seminar and Cupping Session organized by the International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA).

The virtual event, chaired by IWCA chapter presidents María Elena Botto from El Salvador and Sarah Nayeon Kim from South Korea, featured a real-time sensory evaluation session of specialty coffees. Samples were evaluated following the same roasting standards and Cupping SCA international methodology.

Additionally, a remote technical capacity-building session was conducted, explaining the «double washing» process carried out at Finca Las Mercedes in El Salvador. This highlighted the high quality standards and unique characteristics of the national bean.

During the session, IWCA Korea President Sarah Nayeon Kim expressed that the bi-national event’s main goal is to promote knowledge exchange and commercial opportunities between both countries.

«We are confident that this first exchange will open doors to more projects and a better relationship between our coffee enthusiast women’s associations,» she affirmed.

María Elena Botto, President of the Association of Women’s Coffee Alliance of El Salvador (Amces), mentioned that «this coordinated project between both associations creates new opportunities for women representatives in the sector, who have presented samples of specialty coffee to explore a preferential market like South Korea.»

Botto reiterated that these initiatives also aim to encourage more female producers to take advantage of the opportunities provided by collaboration.

Support for the forum was also provided by authorities from the Embassy of El Salvador in South Korea and the Salvadoran Coffee Institute (ISC).
